Lisa Gualtieri, PhD, ScM
What is your interest in social media and health? Why do you think this work is important?
I embrace social media personally and professionally for all that it can do for communication and networking, for the friends I make, the colleagues I stay in touch with, the communities I reach, and for what I learn.
Where did you do your training?
With a PhD in computer science from Harvard University, I embrace all forms of technology. Most of my training in social media comes from teaching a course in Social Media and Health and developing lectures and assignments to help graduate students master the field.
What are your preferred social media platforms?
Twitter is my favorite platform - I find I am most creative there. I have lots of followers. I use many others, including Facebook and LinkedIn, and try out both new platforms and new features on existing ones to see what works and doesn’t work about them. I even used YikYak, which has pretty much died, but had some unique capabilities. By using many platforms, I can better understand how to guide others’ use of them.
What’s a recent social media success?
It’s always really exciting to have big influencers promote your work. As dual promotion for a nonprofit I run with Sandra, RecycleHealth, and the 2016 Movie, “Patriot’s Day,” Mark Wahlberg tweeted about being physically active and #BostonStrong, suggesting followers donate to our cause. It was a monumental moment for us. Another was when George Foreman III posed for a picture with a tracker he was donating to us.
